I cannot ever remember a time when Optics was not a part of my life as I grew up around it. My father is Donal Mac Nally Snr., who is still my mentor and inspiration. He was a leading light in paving the way forward in Optics in Ireland and was fundamental in bringing about positive changes in optical practices resulting in offering better products, approaches, choice and service to customers. I worked on reception in his various practices since I was a teenager on school holidays and learned the ropes and so the seed was sown.

I qualified as a Dispensing Optician in 1987 having attended college in London. I then worked in a large multiple in various practices in London before returning to Dublin in 1989 to work in my father’s company. I was appointed General Manager of the company in 1992 and managed the business alongside my father until the company was sold in 1995.

Mac Nally Opticians on the Green was born in 1996. I wanted, at that point, to offer something more special and different to our customers and went about researching niche unique products to bring to the store. My priority was to ensure our customers experienced a quality one on one personal service and that we established a lasting relationship with them and their families into the future.

I have found that my optical skills are invaluable but I am most interested in the engagement with our clients and selecting the right product offering for them from our extensive portfolio. I want to grow, develop, enhance and bring the business forward onto an even better level. I needed to develop my business knowledge and skills so I completed a Marketing degree and an MBA to help in this regard.

I value my supporting team greatly and want to continue to differentiate ourselves through offering a great experience to our customers.

I love travel, adventure, friends, great food and conversation and learning from my son who is the one who keeps me on my toes.

I am a skilled laboratory technician and fashion adviser with an artistic personality with over a decade of experience at Mac Nally opticians on the green.

I am passionate about unusual eyewear with an appreciation for beauty in colour, texture, and design.

Striving with perfection to marry together and assemble the perfect combination of lenses and frames with attention to detail with each individual piece of eyewear, creating balance and beauty on every aspect of manufacturing: resulting in perfect timing and precision.

After graduating from TCD I began working at MacNallys on the Green in 1998 and have continued with Ellen to the present day.

Having always had a strong interest in all areas of design and style, I instantly appreciated being able to work with our many beautiful and diverse collections.

Through my many years of employment at MacNallys, I have gained a wealth of knowledge and experience, particularly in relation to selecting the perfectly chosen frame tailored to each patients needs and style, something that I always try to accomplish with a personal and friendly service.

Always happy to give guidance to the new patient who might be a little apprehensive about embarking on a spectacle-wearing journey, I love to see a new client leave the store confident that they have received an expert and enjoyable customer experience.

I have always had an interest in style, design, and merchandising.

“Do you have an eye for what looks good?”

As soon as I saw this job advertisement, I knew instinctively this was for me.

20 years later, I am still picking fabulous frames for our customers at MacNally Opticians on the Green.

We are always receiving new frame styles and collections and I love merchandising our beautiful store on St. Stephens Green.

Everyone who knows me says that I am “a real people person”.

I tried IT but it wasn’t for me.

I have always worked in the fashion retail business and love assisting our loyal customers here at MacNally Opticians on the Green.

Optometry is in my blood…there are four generations of opticians in my family.

I graduated with first class honours some thirty-five years ago (yikes!) when thick heavy spectacle lenses and hard contact lenses were the norm.

Nowadays, state of the art equipment and techniques facilitate a much more in depth examination, allowing me to screen for eye disease and produce an optimum prescription for my clients.

I enjoy keeping abreast of the advances in optometry through post graduate study, professional seminars and liaising with my colleagues in optometry and ophthalmology.

The clinical eye examination is my speciality. Working hand-in -hand with a team of technical and fashion experts at Mac Nally’s ensures my recommendations are translated into the optimal visual and cosmetic device for my clients.

I started in Optics in 2003 and qualified as a Dispensing optician with Anglia Ruskin Cambridge in 2012.

I have worked for MacNally opticians on the green since 2015 as a Dispensing Optician.

Taking time to discuss lens options and ensuring the best possible frame choice with each customer

I appreciate a good dispensing challenge, be it getting the paramount finish on a high powered lens or finding the right frame for customers taking on demanding adventures.

I love nothing more than a helping to design a bespoke frame from frame makers like Lindberg, delivering a unique product to the customer that no one else could possibly have.

As for sports eyewear, I am happy to talk all sorts of outdoor pursuits, to ensure the customer gets the best possible optical product to maximise their leisure time.

Fellow staff members have described me as a regular renaissance man, having a passion and zeal for just about most things.

I am passionate about cookery, be it fermentation to smoking fish in my back garden.

I’m a keen Cyclist commuting in and out of Dublin city whatever the weather.

On off days he can be found walking his Dog and loves to keep up to date with all sorts of niche musical genres.
